Google buys You Tube

Today Google acquired You Tube. Should be very interesting in what features are added. Even more interesting will be the DMCA lawsuits that are sure to come for potential copyright infringement. Different than Napster - You Tube is actually hosting the videos - many of which contain IP rights of others.

For example, the video below contains the IP rights of several parties. Fair Use? You be the judge.

HD Beat offers great HDTV content

One of the weblogs I read daily in addition to Engadget is HD Beat. Here is a recent post from their blog:

HDTV Listings for January 14, 2006:

Jake "The Snake" PlummerWhat we're watching: Two of the best AFC teams in the NFL take to the 1080i gridiron on CBS tonight. The Patriots step up to Mile-High Stadium to tackle the Broncos at 8 p.m. and this game could go either way. If for any reason the game gets one-sided (which I doubt), I'll be jacking in to "The Matrix" on TNT-HD at 10:30 p.m. for a 1080i showing. The Oracle already told me who wins the football game anyway...
After the jump is our traditional listing of HD programs throughout the night.

Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today. All times are Eastern and reruns are in italics:

ABC (720p): Figure Skating: U.S. Championships (8 p.m.)

CBS (1080i): NFL Playoffs: Patriots at Broncos (8 p.m.)

NBC (1080i): Crossing Jordan (8 p.m.), Medium (9 p.m.), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m.), Saturday Night Live with host: Scarlett Johansson (11:30 p.m.)

Fox (720p): NFL Playoffs: Redskins at Seahawks (4:30 p.m.)

Discovery-HD (1080i): Sunrise Earth (7 p.m.), Destination HD: Poland(8 & 11 p.m.), Chasing Lance (10 p.m.)

ESPN-HD (720p):
Sportscenter (10:30 p.m.)

HBO-HD (1080i): The Phanton of the Opera (5:30 p.m.), Ocean's Twelve (8 p.m.), Spider-Man 2 (10:15 p.m.)

HDNet Movies (1080i): A Passage to India (7:15 p.m.), Apocalypse Now Redux (10 p.m.)

Showtime-HD (1080i): Son-in-Law (7 p.m.), Masters of Horror (10 & 11 p.m.)

Purdue quarterback Kirsch declares for NFL draft

Purdue quarterback Kirsch declares for NFL draft:
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue quarterback Brandon Kirsch will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL draft.

"I had a good time at Purdue, but I feel that it's time for me to move on," Kirsch said Friday in a news release issued by the school. "I went through the evaluation process, talked to a lot of people and got some good reviews. That made the decision a little easier."

Last season, Kirsch started six times and played in eight games, completing 59.1 percent of his...

OSI Statement on License Proliferation

OSI Statement on License Proliferation:
The OSI has issued a statement on license proliferation.

"OSI's approach on the development and distribution problems involved building as many different bridges as possible between developers and the corporate world. In doing this, we accepted a proliferation of new licenses. This is a problem in that although physical bridges between communities don't interfere with each other, licenses do. Interference between different open-source licenses is now perceived as a sufficiently serious problem that OSI has become as a victim of its own earlier success."

NASCAR SELECTS SIRIUS AS NEW HOME ON SATELLITE RADIO
Live Races Move to SIRIUS Starting in 2007
Five Year Broadcast and Marketing Agreement Includes 24/7 NASCAR Channel

NEW YORK and DAYTONA BEACH, FL - February 22, 2005 - SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) today announced an agreement to give SIRIUS North American satellite radio rights to broadcast NASCAR racing and events that will bring unprecedented programming and marketing opportunities to NASCAR fans. Beginning in 2007, SIRIUS will broadcast all NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races live on a specially created, 24/7 NASCAR channel, and SIRIUS will be the only place on satellite radio to listen to NASCAR.

As part of the agreement, SIRIUS will become the Official Satellite Radio Partner of NASCAR, with exclusive trademark and marketing rights, and the right to sell all advertising time on its NASCAR channel and during the race broadcasts. SIRIUS will pay NASCAR rights fees totaling $107.5 million over the term of the agreement, with the highest payments in the final years of the term.

“We’re thrilled that NASCAR has chosen to move to SIRIUS,” said Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS. “Without question, SIRIUS is the content leader in satellite radio. This decision places SIRIUS on track to become the content leader in all of radio, and we believe it will be an important driver of subscriber growth and advertising revenue. Our 24/7 NASCAR channel will super-serve NASCAR’s 75 million fans nationwide in a way that’s never been done before. In addition to the races, SIRIUS will take fans behind the scenes for inside news and bring them exclusive shows featuring their favorite drivers. It will be the ultimate NASCAR lifestyle experience.”

Ohio Tries to Suppress Municipal-Fi:
Esme Vos dissects the latest state bill that caters to incumbent operators: Existing law prevents municipalities--with their tremendous tax-free advantages as opposed to the massive subsidization of telcos and cable operators--from running their own cable TV systems. Wind Power Falls Under $0.01/kwh

js7a writes "Colorado State University's Rocky Mountain Collegian reports that, "as of June [the price of wind power] dropped to 1 cent per kwh." Even without further expected improvements in turbine technology, the U.S. would now need to use less than 3% of its farmland to get 95% of its electricity demand satisfied by wind power. Plus, wind power is the only mitigation of global warming, because if the whole world converted to wind power in 15 years, the amount of power being extracted from the atmosphere would be more than the increase in greenhouse gas atmospheric energy forcing since 1600. Don't say goodbye to coal and oil, yet, though; unless cell technology increases substantially, when we run out of oil we will convert coal to synthetic fuel." [Slashdot]

Philadelphia to Get Citywide Wi-Fi

The city of Philadelphia plans to spend $10 million to blanket the city in Wi-Fi: The network will either be free or available for a cost lower than commercial providers. It's unclear if such municipal networks will succeed in the future. 3 Rivers Connect built a free, public network in Pittsburgh in 2002 but the network is no longer operating. That network failed for a number of reasons, said George Heinitsh, chief technology officer for 3 Rivers Connect. "The biggest was that we ran into a lot of competition from providers offering service for free," he said. Doug Luce, founder and president of Telerama, an operator of for-fee hotspots in Pittsburgh, cited some other reasons for 3 Rivers' failure. He said that the mesh technology used by 3 Rivers may not have been very reliable. "Part of it also was they had a great signal in the middle of the street but not so great in storefronts," he said. He said that operators that try to cover whole cities might have such coverage issues. Luce also wondered about municipal networks that may be built primarily for use by law enforcement agencies. "If the police use it, they're likely to cater to those people and individual users are relegated to second class citizenship," he said. Still, it's clear that some municipal networks work. The Associated Press story cites Cleveland, which has 4,000 access points in one area of town. The chief information officer of Case Western Reserve University, which is running the project, said that at 2 in the afternoon on a Tuesday, 1,016 people were logged onto the network. The network is free to use. But cities that use tax dollars to build networks, ought to have a clear plan for marketing and using the network because even commercial ventures are having trouble figuring out the best business model for operating a Wi-Fi network. Luce says of the Philadelphia network: "This is an expensive experiment."... [Wi-Fi Networking News]

Logitech introduces MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse

Logitech on Wednesday introduced the MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse. The company bills is as "the world's first laser mouse," since the mouse uses laser illumination and tracking. What's more, it uses "Fast RF" wireless technology to connect to either a Mac or PC. The laser light of the cordless mouse is nearly invisible and very safe, according to the company -- it beams down onto the surface and reflects back up; a sensor in the mouse detects movements and translates that to cursor motion. Sun Claims It Is Considering Buying Novell

I have it figured out, I think. Sun's Jonathan Schwartz is jealous of Darl McBride. *He* yearns to be the most hated man in tech. But no matter how many awful things he says, he's still just the runner up. Actually, no one bothers to hate either of them, but it'd be easy, if we weren't so nice here on the good guy side. Here is the latest from Sun, that they are thinking of buying Novell, so they can annoy IBM, I gather: "Sun Microsystems is toying with the idea of buying Linux seller Novell, saying that springing for the $2.64 billion company would hurt rival IBM."'With our balance sheet, we're considering all our options,' Sun Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Schwartz said in an interview Sunday regarding the possibility of acquiring Novell. 'What would owning the operating system on which IBM is dependent be worth? History would suggest we look to Microsoft for comparisons,' he said." I think toying is the word. If you wish to know what Mr. Schwartz really thinks, try his blog. [GrokLaw]

Largest Free Network?

Panera claims a great title: largest free Wi-Fi hotspot network: In a press release today, Panera says its network of 325 free Wi-Fi hotspots is the largest such free network. They plan to have 500 stores out of 637 current outlets unwired within 12 months. An additional 140 to 150 stores will open this year, and Wi-Fi is planned as part of their design. The press release has metrics on performance: ...the average total online time per bakery/cafe has increased three-fold over the last twelve months. Internal research indicates that of the hundreds of thousands of customer accesses over the last year, the average connect time is one hour. Interestingly, there's no dollars-to-time ratio: are folks spending 10 percent more who use Wi-Fi? 100 percent more? Less? We don't know, but we must expect that they do. (Update: Here's a story from Mobile Pipeline that quotes the chairman and CEO saying, "Offering free Wi-Fi Internet access is keeping our customers in our stores longer -- primarily during off-peak hours -- and bringing them back more often," he said. Still no dollars, but at least an affirmative statement.) Off-peak hours is the mantra of the retail hotspot establishments: they're eager to fill seats when they're empty. Nominations welcome for other free hotspot networks that rival Panera's, but I think they may have the claim. Best Western and other hotel chains are rolling out free high-speed Internet access, but they are generally available only to guests, and often incorporate a lot of in-room wired service except in newer installations.... Didion Sprague writes "A bug in recently released DirecTv/Tivo software is allegedly causing major chaos with many Tivo users -- forcing many users over the past few days to upgrade their Series 1 Tivo boxes to newer, Series 2 models (which retail for $79). Apparently lots of folks on the TIVO Community forum and DBS forums are frustrated and angry. The bug has apparently been reproduced and causes the video stream to freeze when a combination of factors are met. DirecTv has been offering users who complain a $79 credit -- but hasn't admitted the problem, let alone offered up a timetable for a fix. The problem only occurs with the DirecTv Tivo boxes -- not the standalone models." [Slashdot]

Airport Express: First Impressions

When the Airport Express was first announced, I figured I'd let other people try it first and then get it later after reading the reviews. That lasted all of about 2 hours (silly me) and then I went ahead and put my order in. Thanks to that early order, I got to watch my Airport Express wind its way from Taiwan—presumably along with the rest of the first shipment—via its FedEx tracking number. Unfortunately it arrived at my house while I was away on business and it wasn't until Saturday morning that I got to get my mitts on it.

But soon enough, get my mitts on it I did. And it's been a shear pleasure to play with. Of course the first thing I did was set it up and stream audio to it from iTunes. And it worked. Nicely. In fact, every minute I've been home this weekend, there's been music streaming to my stereo from my laptop. It's pretty seamless. The only hint that there's not a wire between the laptop and the big speakers is the bit of lag when playback is started or stopped. Oh, and the fact that there isn't a freaking cable between the laptop and the stereo.

Read more about it on my blog.

The Problem With Online Music

The New York Times today hits the nail on the head: if you’re buying music over the net, you’re buying it in severely damaged condition. When I plug my computer into the really good stereo at home, the difference between the way music sounds coming off CD or vinyl or a good FM signal, and the crippled version from MP3 compression isn’t subtle. I used to think that if you were listening to music on headphones on a bus or train or plane or in a crowd, the MP3 lossage really didn’t matter much. But recently I’ve been listening to the Shure 3C phones, and it’s obvious that we really shouldn’t be ignoring these compression issues; in particular since lossless compression is available right here, right now. WWDC: Apple intros 30-inch Cinema HD display

Apple on Monday introduced a new 30-inch Apple Cinema HD display, a new flat panel screen that features 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. Apple also introduced new 23-inch and 20-inch displays to replace their existing flat panel monitors. The new displays all have the by-now familiar widescreen aspect ratio found across almost all of Apple's pro hardware line, and sport dual FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, and use DVI to connect to video cards instead of Apple's vaunted ADC interface -- making the new monitors compatible out-of-the-box with Power Macs, PowerBooks, and PC-compatible computers as well. Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price, and Features in a Home Gateway

AirPort Express from Apple puts audio, print spooler, bridging, and Ethernet in one tiny package: Apple has released a seven-ounce home Wi-Fi gateway that's barely larger than a power adapter. The AirPort Express works with any Wi-Fi device, but it particularly supports streaming music through a built-in analog and digital audio jack and USB printer spooling through a built-in USB port on certain later release of Mac OS X and Windows XP and 2000. The small device runs 802.11g with full WPA support, and handles bridging via Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Apple guarantees WDS will work only with its own devices. The AirPort Express can act as an access point and bridge at the same time. Apple's free iTunes software for Mac and Windows will have a small update this week to handle choosing a particular AirPort Express base station's attached stereo or powered speakers. The AirPort Express raises the bar on features, as it combines print spooling, audio streaming, and WDS in one form factor. Similar features are available from many other manufacturers, but typically only as a single device (audio/photo/MPEG streaming only) or with limitations, like Linksys's WRT54G which can either bridge or be an AP, but not both. It remains to be seen whether Apple can find a broader audience for its product with a $129 price tag when it ships in July, but its combination of portability and plugs might push it into the forefront of both the home market and the roaming traveler's world.... We built OneNote in relative secrecy during 2001-2002. Well, it wasn’t cloak and dagger stuff - we just didn't make any effort to talk about it outside of Office - although rumours that Office was building some "TabletPC app" did spread to other parts of the company, a misconception which until recently was probably worse inside the company than outside, since we were able to communicate pretty clearly to the public the message we wanted to get across after we announced. ...... Paul Andrews at the Seattle

Paul Andrews at the Seattle Times wrote a nice column looking at how cafes in Seattle and San Francisco handle the potential for Wi-Fi users to over stay their welcome: In Seattle, the cafes offering free Wi-Fi have pretty laid back rules. One restaurant asks visitors to buy something but has no time or spending limits. Another that often gets crowded asks other patrons who may be looking for a seat to politely ask laptop users how long they'll be around. None of the Seattle venues he spoke with say it's an issue. In San Francisco, where Andrews believes more cafes charge a fee for access, some venues have methods for cutting down on use. One turns off the network at 6 p.m. Others have signs on tables asking users to stay for just an hour. Techdirt notes that there's no evidence such measures are necessary. Most Wi-Fi users give up their seats if the place gets crowded plus they tend to visit during off hours when a venue is looking for customers.... [Wi-Fi Networking News]

While only tangentially related

/mobilewhack0d-20">

While only tangentially related to MobileWhack's usual fare, I thought this of interest enough to our readers to give a shout out to "Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks", the start of a cool new project-based hacking series from O'Reilly.

From How to Hack a Toaster to building Cubicle Intrusion Detection Systems, Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks offers an array of inventive customized electronics projects for the geek who can't help looking at a gadget and wondering how it might be "upgraded." Beginning with basic hacks, tools, and techniques for those who may not have a background in electronics, the book covers the tools of the hardware hacking trade and basic soldering techniques. Clear step-by-step instructions allow even those with no formal electronics- or hardware-engineering skills to hack real hardware in very clever ways.

You'll find a Table of Contents [PDF] and some samples on the O'Reilly site.

Editor's note: In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that I am an editor at O'Reilly.

When the big iTunes/Pepsi promo kicks off on Sunday during the Super Bowl, indie music advocacy group Downhill Battle will launch a promotion of their own, one aimed at taking some of Pepsi's dollars away from the major music labels. They're calling it Tune Recycler; Downhill Battle will use it to take some of the unwanted winning codes from among the 100 million being given away and use them to buy "quality music from honest independent labels," according to group member Holmes Wilson. Jim Thompson of NetGate wrote

Jim Thompson of NetGate wrote a short analysis of the Nomadix gateway redirection patent, which he gave us permission to reproduce: Jim is the former CTO of Wayport, and an engineer with many years standing in the Wi-Fi industry. He writes about Rob Flickenger's response to the Nomadix patent on the NoCat mailing list. NoCat is an open-source authentication gateway project. Here's Jim's email to myself and a Freenetworks.org list. Some of the terminology may be obscure to those of you not in the industry, but I hope we can start a dialog to explain these parts. (Disclaimer: Jim is representing his own opinion on his own time and his opinion doesn't represent the view of this site or any of his employers past and present.) Jim writes: [Rob writes] specifically: I think the critical phrase from the press release is: "This redirection takes place regardless of the host computer's settings and without altering the user's browser settings." Unfortunately, that has little or nothing to do with the patent. When one reads patents, one has to read the claims. The other text is basically fluff. [Patent number] 6,636,894 has 11 claims. Of these, 2 are so-called "independent claims", and the other 9 depend on one of these two independent claims (or on another dependent claim.) The two independent claims are #1 and #6. 1. A method for redirecting an original destination address access request to a redirected destination address, the method comprising the steps of: receiving, at a gateway device, all original destination address access requests originating from a computer; determining, at the gateway device, which of the original destination address requests require redirection;storing the original destination address if redirection is required; modifying, at the gateway device, the original destination address access request and communicating the modified request to a redirection server if redirection is required;responding, at the redirection server, to the modified request with a browser redirect message that reassigns the modified request to an administrator-specified, redirected destination address;intercepting, at the gateway device, the browser redirect message and modifying it with the stored original destination address; andsending the modified browser redirect message to the computer, which automatically redirects the computer to the redirected destination address. and 6. A system for redirecting an original destination address access request to a redirected destination address, the system comprising:a computer that initiates original destination address requests;a gateway device in communication with the computer,... We were all set to label this leak of footage from "Star Wars: Episode III" as a stealth marketing tactic, but then all of a sudden all the websites we linked to for the footage got the official order from Lucas Film to take the clips down. So this is genuine leakage! As you can see, the new "evil" Anakin (Hayden Christensen) is sporting long hair and is in a hardcore battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). You can also see Anakin meeting with the Emperor. And yes, that screen shot at the end is indeed a shot of Darth Vader's first appearance!!

Free hotel Internet access hits fever pitch with 2,200 Holiday Inns about to offer it: InterContinental Hotels Group will announce tomorrow that most of its 2,500 hotels, including 2,200 Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express properties, will offer free Internet access by the end of the year, the Wall Street Journal reported. The article doesn't note if any of it is Wi-Fi or not, but points out that 70 percent of Holiday Inn's guests are business travelers. This latest edition means that by the end of 2004, the majority of moderate business-class hotels will have free wireless and wired in-room and common room access. Some scattered independent properties and high-end hotels (Westin, Hyatt, Marriott, Renaissance, and so forth) are largely continuing to charge, although most are offering a $10 to $15 per night phone and Internet rollup with unlimited usage.
